Piano Masterclass (for the Dance Workshop, please see below...)

Saturday afternoon, March 13th 2010 between 14:30 and 15:30 PM, before the festival evening, the Stichting Boogie Promotions Holland organizes a Piano Masterclass by Ricky Nye (Cincinnati, Ohio, USA). Ricky will be playing the piano and tell about boogie, blues piano and his views and experiences.

The Masterclass is open for everybody and primarily meant to be attended by enthusiasts, fans and for piano players (amateurs and professionals).

Ricky Nye has been a working musician since the age of twelve, when he began playing in a band with his father and his uncles. After finishing high school he attended Berklee College of Music where he studied piano and composition. Ricky has always considered himself to be a student of music, and finds a common thread between many different musical styles- his experiences involve not just blues and boogie woogie, but also jazz (traditional and modern), country, funk, soul and R&B.

Ricky is from Cincinnati, Ohio, the home of King Records and a wealth of musical heritage- he had the opportunity to learn directly from masters of blues and boogie such as fellow Cincinnatians the late Big Joe Duskin and Pigmeat Jarrett, and bluesmen such as the late H-Bomb Ferguson and Big Ed Thompson.

Topics to be addressed at the master class are:

- left hand patterns
- right hand vocabulary
- basic theory philosophy
- question and answer segment
- hands-on instruction segment

Dance Workshop (Charleston)

Saturday afternoon, March 13th 2010 between 13:00 and 14:00 PM, before the festival evening, the Stichting Boogie Promotions Holland organizes a Dance Workshop by Ben van Hal and Marga Visser.

The Masterclass is open for everybody, also for those without dance experiences.

Boogie Woogie is dance music introduced in Europe during the 1940's by American soldiers. The music people danced to was Jazz, Ragtime, Blues en Bop, at that time called Rock 'n Roll. Boogie Woogie kept a lot of its origins and the swing is unmistakenly recognizable.

Ben and Marga will introduce you to the Charleston, the predecessor of Boogie Woogie.

Ben and Marga have been dancing over 10 years together and are teaching together many years too. They are part of the Savoy Dancers (www.savoydancers.nl)

You can apply for the Dance Workshop by clicking here. Entrance fee is € 10. Payment is cash, before the start of the Masterclass.
